A little profit taking/ consolidation going on today. Wheat futures are down a dime, corn is off a couple. The close could be interesting. Crop progress report yesterday showed 93% of the corn planted vs. 94% last year and 95% on the 5 year avg. Amazing progress! It also showed 73% is emerged vs. 85% on the 5 year, and the crop is rated 70% Good to Ex vs. 63% last year. Amazing catch up! The one really big question that remains is HOW MANY ACRES will there be? You might remember the USDA was guessing about 85 myn acres based on a survey sent out the first of March. An awful lot has changed since then?plus we have a difference of about 6.5 myn ?principle acres? that were unaccounted for in the March 30 prospective planting report? Will those acres get planted, and to WHAT? Winter wheat is 73% headed vs. 73% last year and 81% on the 5 year, crop is rated 45% G-Ex, the same as last week, it was 47% last year.
Odds-n-Ends: 15 groups and 3 countries released a statement of opposition of the synchronized release of GMO wheat. It seems the release is inevitable, the main questions are the how, and the when. Univ. of Missouri think tank says that increasing blend requirements by 50% to 15% ethanol blend will only increase the price of gas and corn by .04/ gallon?.things that make you go hmmmmm. Bunge, Itochu and STX will build a new export facility at Longview, Wa. Construction is scheduled to start this month, they hope to be in operation by fall of 2011.The new facility will be owned by: 51% Bunge, 295 Itochu, and 20% by South Korean shipper STX, and will have rail capacity for 4 x 110 cars shuttles at the same time. Some of you may remember that Bunge used to have an export house (now owned by CLD) years ago.
Int?l: Dryness in Chinese bean country, but has not yet got to ?drought? status. Rains continue in Aussie. Rabobank says they will certainly help 2009 crop prospects. The average production guesses for Aussie right now are 22-23.5 myn mt (it?s a wide range, but then there is a lot of time before harvest). The CWB (Canadian Wheat Board) says that wheat planting is 92% complete.
***Didja Know: Winston Churchill?s quote of ?it?s a riddle, wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma? seems to apply so many of the things happening today?.
