The market is following the path of least resistance this morning, which is lower. US $$ is pretty much unch?d. China said that they see no sudden currency change. Deutsche Bank says that they expect the US currency to increase in value over the balance of the year (not px friendly for grain sales). Fridays Hog report showed MASSIVE herd liquidation. This will translate into lower feed demand. One thing to remember is that once the economy starts to improve, the hog inventories, and feed usage will pick back up. COT report was interesting if for no other reason to see the scale of the liquidation. Specs have sold 90 myn bu of Chic, while the funds have pedaled 40 myn bu, in corn the numbers are just more dramatic. The specs have reduced their long position by 235 myn bu (funds have added another 5 myn bu). Big report out tomorrow and could swing this market hard either way. The inspection report showed Corn shipments of only 26.6 myn bu (trade was hoping for something in the 30 ?35 myn bu range). On wheat the shipments were only 10.1 myn bu with the traders were looking for 13 ?17 myn bu. The carries in the market imply that the fundamentals at least in wheat for now are getting worse.

Report from Argie is that their wheat acreage will be the lowest in years. In fact they are thinking crop production may only be around 6 myn mt, which is juuusssst enough for domestic needs, which means scratch Argie from the wheat export grid for 2009- 10.

Crude inventories are up 8.7% since January, meanwhile the prices have rallied 57%? I read one report that suggested crude could be as low as $58 by the end of the 3rd quarter.

***Didja Know: Coca Cola does not own ANY of its own bottling plants? Things were tough when they started out, so they hired the bottling done on a % basis. Lobsters and grasshoppers feel NO pain. The only ?living? part of a tree is the thin layer under the bark (cambium), its leaves and the tips of the roots/ branches. Antarctica only gets about 2? of snow / year?

The US $$ is down, crude was up this morning early, but has given up all those gains and is now lower. Corn has scratched out a small gain, and only in Mpls are the wheat futures lower on the morning. Markets are trying to anticipate what the Senate sub committee recommendations mean. The ?index funds? have been our friends. They are always long, and provide great liquidity. The specs have always been a knife that cuts both ways, but everyone needs a knife in the kitchen. The big question is whether the funds will be forced to liquidate.

Egypt booked 2.2 myn bu of French wheat at $5.21/ bu. The IGC reduced world wheat carryout by about 1 myn mt, but they reduced demand by more. The fundamentals remain bearish for wheats. About 40 growers have gathered together to form their own grain company in NSW. Interestingly the growers chose a corporate structure vs. a Co-op model. Malaysia booked their first cargo of US corn in over 2 years. They will be back with Indonesia to tender for 2.9 ?3.6 myn more bu of corn for Sept- Oct TOS. Philippines will also be in to tender for 1.8 myn bu of Dec corn. So there is some demand/ tire kicking going on, but solid large purchases are rare.

Corn futures have tested the $4 Dec limit a number of times and so far it remains intact. It will take some big pressure to push through?something like next Tuesday?s report. It feels like the market really doesn?t want to take much lower at least until this report passes and we get a feel on what pollination will turn out like. HRW futures continue to feel the heat of harvest pressure, as stocks start to build.

Please note the change in months above!!!

US $$ is stronger this morning, but that will offset somewhat by a little cheaper ocean freight. Panamax rates have slipped on reduced exports of grain/ coal. Large specs continue to liquidate, and we are seeing some new shorts. Sub committee report on impact of Index funds on the market will be negative to futures, especially if CME is forced to enforce trading limits. The CME says that findings by independent studies by CBOT, CME, Informa, and GAO differ with the subcommittee report?Heres the deal: The MARKET can handle the extra volume. The problem occurs when the rules are changed mid stream: Facts: In 2004 index funds held 30m caks, while in 2008 that number mushroomed to 220m caks. Basis on SRW went from .13 to $1.53. Index funds were supposed to be limited to 6500 caks each, but these were ignored/ not enforced (some funds held up to 53,000 caks). The argument from the ?4? was that the funds were responding to other factors in the world such as Record growth, Record tight stocks etc. and the market worked, to bring supply back into line with demand. In any event, IF the index funds are forced to get in line with 6500 cak limit, it will BEARISH futures. For example there are over 1700 corn caks offered for sale in the DEC slot, just above today?s prices.

USDA report will be out next TUESDAY morning! Futures will be closed FRIDAY. Export Sales tallied 27 myn for Corn (which is on pace, but the actual shipments are behind?like wheat was all year). Wheat Sales totaled a nice 13.5 myn bu; 2.9 DNS, 5.4 HRW, 2.3 SRW and 2.9 SWW.

While the Canadian Spring wheat plantings are up 7% vs. last year, world wheat production is estimated down about 40 myn mt, vs last year. The problem is, demand is off more than that. Jordan did buy 3.6 myn Black Sea wheat, and Egypt continues to improve the inspection and quality control on all imports. Aussie?s CBH says they expect WA (Western Australia) production to increase by nearly 50% by 2025.

Fun Trivia:  Shadow opened the door to Dr. Adam Apple’s office and surveyed the scene.  Dr. Apple’s head lay on his desk surrounded by a pool of blood.  On the floor to his right lay a small hand gun.  There were powder burns on his right temple indicating that he was shot at close range.  On his desk was a suicide note, and his right hand held the pen that had written it.  Shadow recorded the time as 3:30 p.m., and ascertained that death had occurred within the past hour.  As Shadow was gathering clues. Dr. Apple’s wife burst into the office and screamed, “my husband’s been shot!” Why would he want to kill himself”?  “This was no suicide,” said Shadow, “ this was clearly a case of murder.”  How does he know?

Answer:  Dr. Apple held a pen in his right hand.  If it was suicide, the last thing his right hand could have held was the gun.

US $ is lower, traders expected a bit of ?turn around Tuesday?. Not much happening on this end though. Futures are running + / - a penny or so, except in Beans which are up 16. Weather man sez the southern plains ought to get some GREAT harvest weather the next 10 days. Yields range from ?disappointing to respectable? depending on who you talk to, what story you would like to hear. Bottom line is that Kansas looks to produce something in the 340 myn bu range will teeter toward ?respectable?. Carries in the markets (especially KC and Chic) are very large. Chicago carries are massive (if they aren?t a record, they MUST be close) at nearly .30 for July/ Sept indicating the fundamentals are still really weak.

Crop scores showed that the US corn crop was 70% G-Ex again last week vs. 59% a year ago. Beans are rated 67% G-Ex vs. 57% last year. Winter wheat harvest is rated at 20% complete vs. 31% last year, and Spring wheat is rated 77% G-Ex. One thing to remember about those great ratings is that it is pretty tough to improve them, but the downside could still be large. Army Corp of Engineers will open the Missouri for navigation on 7/1. There are still many users would like to make it a viable transportation alternative to rail. History has showed the flows are pretty inconsistent, making shipping plans hit/ miss at best.

Stats Canada reported that Canola and Spring wheat acreage will be quite a bit higher than farmers originally indicated in their March survey. In the case of Canola, acres will be almost 1 myn more than the survey?but even so, the total will be less acres than last year. India?s corn shipments will increase, but will still only be about 1 myn mt vs. last years 3 myn mt.

***Didja Know: US fuel demand is down 6% vs. last year at this same time? Gasoline inventories are up 3.4 myn bbls showing the largest increase in stocks since January?Sez here that chewing gum while peeling onions will keep you from crying?.I don?t know about that?.

Crude is sharply lower, the US $$ is sharply higher, and futures are getting hammered. Chicago is down another .12, KC is down .11 and Mpls is down 8. Corn is off .15, and beans have coughed up another .22-25. Harvest progressed quickly in Kansas till rains chased everyone from the fields. Weather man gave a price negative (crop positive) weather report: Northern and WCB will be wet, while the Southern / ECB will get some heat/ dry. Definitely a good thing for crops. Market is expecting very high crop scores again this pm. Inspection report was ?good? for wheat with 13.3 myn bu; 2.8 DNS, 6.3 HRW, 1.3 SRW, 2.9 SWW. Corn was rated ?good? also with 38 myn bu shipped. COT though lagging in timing did show a definite trend; Specs/ Funds were holding their largest positions in nearly a year, just prior to this correction. Specs have actually turned to the short side while the funds are still holding 750 myn bu long position?wow this has cost them a bunch of $$$. Last week the specs unwound about 200 myn bu of corn futures while the funds gained another 40 myn bu. Another expensive week for the ?managed? money. The SRW crop definitely needs some heat/ dry to fight disease. It will be interesting to see how the futures handle delivery of the SRW if crop quality is compromised. We had .15 positive basis this morning Portland Sept vs. Chicago Sept.

Cattle on Feed was very bullish (for the cattle guy, not for the grain guy). Cattle on Feed numbers were the smallest since ?96, and are down 14% vs. last year?down 17% vs. the 3 year average. Breakdown by weights were even more friendly as the weight classes gaining the most in numbers were the lighter weights.

China removed their 3% export tax on wheat and beans over the weekend. China?s summber wheat harvest is 90% complete. 20% of China?s rice acres were planted to ?super rice? capable of 7.1 mt / hectare vs. world average of 3.9 mt/ ha. ABARE increases crop prospects for the Aussie crop by 1% vs. last years numbers (better rain in the last month and half). Iran says wheat prospects look good, projecting 13.5 myn mt, meaning they anticipate NO wheat imports in ?09-10 crop year.

Fun Trivia:  Two of the fastest horsemen in the kingdom proposed to the king’s daughter.  The king didn’t like either suitor, but he wanted to look fair so he suggested a horse race in which the winner would have his daughter’s hand.  The only catch was that the winner would be the person whose horse came in second.  The king was certain the race would never take place because he felt that neither horsemen would let the other win.  Finally, the king’s daughter made a suggestion to the two horsemen that would guarantee a fair race.  What did she suggest?

This day in History:  1885: Statue of Liberty arrives in New York Harbor     1977: Elvis' last concert recordings     1944: United States scores major victory against Japanese in Battle of the Philippine Sea

Quote to Note:  America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.          – Abraham Lincoln

Answer:  The king’s daughter suggested that the two horsemen trade horses.  Each horsemen would now try to win the race, since if he did, his horse would come in second.. and he would win the king’s daughter’s hand in marriage.
