Another day, the same story. US $$ is down and should be helpful to any exports.  The futures started by rallying, then gave up part of the rally, but are still clinging to higher values. The export sales reports showed corn sales of 29.8 myn bu o/c and 10 myn bu of n/c. These sales are basically market neutral, the problem is with shipments which are lagging and show 379 myn bu of ?unshipped? corn. Wheat sales were a dismal 3.8 myn bu of o/c and a not too shabby 8.3 myn bu of n/c?SWW was 1.1 myn bu of the 3.8 with 1 week remaining, total exports for SWW will likely end up short of the 140 myn USDA number.

The Tx/ Okie harvest continues with poor yields and pretty good quality. Most yields are in the teens/ low 20?s. The expectation for Okie is 23 bpa vs. 37 last year, while for Texas total production is expected to be about 64 myn bu vs. 99 myn bu last year. The Kansas crop is rated 47 G-Ex. Overall the USDA rates the winter wheat crop at 45 G-Ex. Just off the phone with a guy from Colorado, they got about 4.5? in eastern Colorado, he said the crop that looked like 35 bpa, may go 50, but it ain?t in the bin yet. Locally the wheat still suffers and more turns blue every day. Thundershowers this weekend? We could sure use it!

Weather continues to favor good crops in the Black sea region. The IGC took estimated world corn down just a little, but took wheat up. Competition between Ukraine, Russia and Kazakhstan will be tough for exports.

***Didja Know: Brand new baby giraffes are over 6? tall and weigh up to 200 lbs?the heart of a blue whale is the size of a small car?.ants don?t sleep?.ever. The scales of a crocodile are made up of ?keratin? the same thing as hooves and fingernails. The fastest animal known? The spine tail swift can get up to 106 mph. The fastest swimmer is a sailfish that can get up to 68 mph (Dolphins can only go 37 mph, some sharks can get up to 44 mph)?SEZ here that an average car will use about 1.6 ounces of gas idling for 1 minute, and it takes about ? an ounce to start a car?

HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND!!!

Well its been one of those mornings!!! Chicago wheat futures have already traded a .28 range, whilst Mpls has traded has traded a .23 range, and given up all early gains and is sitting at even right now. Corn traded a .12 range and has also given up all its gains. We are logging lots of phone time, gaining little traction. Fundamentals simply do not support these types of rallies, which seem like a great selling opportunity to me, but until we get into a delivery month (still about a month away).

Corn feels a bit toppy. India did sell some corn to Malaysia, and Japan booked 1.8 myn bu of wheat overnight. Export sales report will be out tomorrow, due to the Memorial holiday. International news is pretty light this morning, creating little market direction.

Mpls futures are SMOKIN’ this morning up 20. Chicago and KC are getting some support from Mpls and are up about 8, making futures sales look even more attractive. Sept futures for 2010 are at $7.07 this morning! Crop progress report was actually bearish for corn yesterday, with 82% of the crop planted vs. 86% last year and 93% on 5 year avg. Emergence is ahead of last years 48%, and the corn in the WCB is said to look very good. There will be showers in the east again, and some acres will again see some delays. Market is giving strong incentive today to get the acres in, even if they are late rather than switch to something like beans. The 8-14 day for the ECB calls for below normal temps with normal precip. Spring wheat plantings are at 79% vs. 97% on the 5 year ave. Winter wheat is 68% headed with the 5 year ave of 71%. Locally the wheat is suffering from the "blue flu"…lots of wheat is showing stress, and its not just the lighter soils/ hill tops. Brown spots are showing up, and by the end of the week we will see a lot more brown, as temps are supposed to climb to the 90’s. Winter wheat harvest is rolling into Oklahoma….The yields are predictably bad, but the quality is good.

Russia (working to become the world’s #2 wheat exporter) is now eyeing the ‘far east’ markets of Asian and the Pacific regions for growth potential. They are planning to export 19 myn mt this year vs. 15 myn mt last year. Drier parts of Europe, Ukraine and Russia all received rain. EARLY Aussie estimates for WA wheat production are starting to surface. Today they are calling WA wheat production down 1- 3 myn mt vs. last year. Its way to early to tell today, but is worth watching to see how they progress.

Futures started much lower, giving up all of Friday?s gains. Then came back to reclaim losses and are currently a little lower.  Chicago has traded a .17 range, Mpls a .07, while KC and Corn have traded a .14 ranges already this morning. Basis is noticeably weaker. As always its too dry, its too wet, too hot or too cold SOMEWHERE in the world this time of year. Traders would like a little more wet in the WCB (produced about 60% of last years corn), but not too much cuz spring wheat plantings are behind because its been too wet. ECB is still a bit too wet, although crop progress is expected to show corn plantings at 80+% later today. Watching the COT report has been interesting on rallies like this to see just who is buying what: Last week the index funds went long another 25 myn bu of Chicago SRW (Specs are still a net short). But the real interesting thing was in corn: Spec funds added 130 MYN bu to their positions, while the index funds added 58 myn bu meaning the overall spec long increased by 188 MYN BU in corn last week! There?s your rally?

Inspection report showed only 27.5 myn bu of corn shipped vs. 37.5 myn bu needed to maintain USDA pace. In wheats we had 18.9 myn shipped (but needed over 31 myn). Tallies: 1.7 myn DNS, 7 HRW, 1.35 SRW and whopping 8 myn SWW. Some exporters seem content to own SWW at about -.35 basis vs. Chicago (although not all exporters favor this strategy).

Int?l News: As we mentioned earlier (hot, cold, dry, wet); It is still a bit dry in Eastern Europe, Ukraine and Russia are colder/ drier than they would like. China is dry once again in the northern provinces, but claim that their summer crops will set a production record for the 6th straight year. More rain in Aussie will help the winter crops, and should ensure that pretty much all acreage gets planted. Egypt OK?s Russian wheat quality for human consumption. Apparently quality was not the issue, Egyptian officials said ?it is not the quality of the wheat, it is the cleanliness, and this can be treated?. Egypt is typically a ?cheapest class? buyer, so some hurdles are acceptable if the price is right.

Aussie is protesting potentially new US Dairy subsidies and will like get other nations as backers. Any new subsidies will be seen as ?protectionist? in today?s environment.

Market keeps re-cycling and trading the same news. Today the most positive news is the US $ is weaker again. Specs showed up for work, not to take profits, but to own futures, wheats are up 18-20, corn is up 6-8. Actually the weather looks really good for crop production in most parts of the US, although there is a bit of hand wringing as it is a bit dry in the WCB, one report even used the ?d? word. In today?s market any weather LESS than ideal is food food for the bull?Market volume is light today and all one way. There simply is not much sell pressure on the opposite side, so the bubble gets bigger. Traders are expecting planting progress to surge to/ past 80% on Tuesdays update vs. a 5 year average of 95%. With corn, the market is so eager for news the traders are looking 1 ? years out to the start of the 2010 crop. It looks like a selling opportunity, but then, I said that .15 ago.

Rain arrived in Aussie as the weather man called it. This should allow them to finish winter wheat seeding, especially in WA. The ave. Aussie guess for the ?09-10 crop is 21.6 myn mt, vs the USDA?s 23 myn mt, and ABARE?s 22.1 myn mt. Dry weather in Eastern Europe finally made the radar. Its not serious at this time, but worth mentioning.

Potash Corp (they control 22% of the world?s production) announced another round of production cuts to raise prices. India?s wheat exchange was open yesterday for the first time in about 2 ? years in anticipation of India?s gov?t lifting export bans.

***Didja Know: Scientists say that Niagara Falls will only last another 2400 years. ?No one can go back and make a brand new start, but ANYONE can start from here and make a brand new ending?.

Have a great weekend, and take time to remember the men and women that have served in the US Armed Forces for their sacrifices.

Energies are lower, grain pits won’t get ‘outside’ help this morning. We can also expect some profit taking/ position squaring today and tomorrow ahead of the long weekend (no markets on Monday). Warm dry weather scheduled for the majority of the corn belt till about next Wednesday night/ Thursday morning. North Dakota is drying out, and planting progress should surge there this weekend, while Canada is still fighting the cool/ wet.

Sales reports were ok for corn; traders had hoped for something in the range of 31.5 to 51 myn bu. Sales totals were only 26.9 myn bu, but there was an additional 5.5 myn bu for ‘new crop’. Markets today are only focused on old crop sales. Wheat finished another dismal week. Trader had hoped for 7.3 – 16.5 myn bu. Sales only totaled .7 myn in the old crop slot (only a couple weeks left), but there were 19.9 myn bu in new crop sales. Old crop sales were: .4 DNS, 1.6 HRW, .9 SRW and a MINUS 2.6 in SWW (cancellations). Clearly we will not hit the higher recently revised USDA export numbers on wheat. Japan was in overnight and booked 3.9 myn bu of which the US got 2.3 myn: 1.4 DNS, .3 HRW and .3 SWW.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise, but the confirmation is nice; DOE/EIA stats show that current blending rates are not high enough to hit the revised 3.75 byn bu corn usage numbers. If you looked at the last S&D’s they not only raised the corn usage for ethanol by 100 myn bu, but for next year started with a 4.1 byn bu corn usage number. Thus the reason to track all the ethanol activity. A potential 375 myn bu usage swing in corn is HUGE!

Kazi wheat production is expected to rebound this year on increased acres/ better weather. Last month Brazil set a record of 4.5 myn mt of bean exports. Argie continues to lean toward more bean acres…for growers watching, the market will start to reflect any potential acreage shift in the deferreds. WA (Western Australia) is forecast to start getting significant rain as the drills get ready to roll. Looking at the weather maps, most of the system has been around the coastal areas so far, and have not yet got very far inland.

Leaving early this morning for “Meet and Greet” for Morrow Counties new Grain Merchandiser Brian Peiler, and a marketing meeting….please call for current price updates…

Futures called marginally higher, but opened VERY strong, with wheats up 15. Its an odd market; John Deere reported profits would be down 38% for the last ¼, and down 29% on the year, yet stock prices were up over $3/ share in early trade. Crop progress for the week had something for everyone….the crop estimates showed corn plantings nationwide at 62% vs. 85% on 5 yr ave. Illinois is 20% vs. 73% (5 yr), Indiana is 24% vs. 67%, Ohio is 39 vs. 52%. Then there are places like Nebraska that is 93% planted vs. 88% on the 5 yr ave. What is interesting though is that emergence is 30% vs. 49% on 5 yr ave. Spring wheat is 50% planted vs. 90% on 5 yr ave…emergence is 21% vs. 59%. Inspection report showed that corn shipment were ok at 36.9 myn bu. Wheat shipments were 3. 8 myn bu, only .3 SWW. Kansas wheat crop is rated 54% G-Ex, while Okie is rated 63% P-VP and Texas is even worse at 73% P-VP. By the way harvest has started in Texas. CBOT will allow trades further out in the future starting next month corn futures will go out to 2012. US will donate $100 myn immediately to Pakistan to help with humanitarian aid as they continue to battle the Taliban. Cargill sold 13 myn bu of corn to South Korea, ½ of it should lift the US.

Pacific Ethanol filed yesterday. They have 420 myn gallon capacity (would use 150 myn bu of corn/ year if they were running) on 4 plants; Boardman, Burley, Stockton and Madera. They list assets at $50-100 myn and debt at $100-500 myn. Judge allowed another $7 myn extension loan, but most bankers holding the notes would prefer liquidation vs. adding more debt (they have about $274 myn in bank notes).

Argie has been the world’s # 2 corn exporter and is expected to see their annual shipments decrease by 2/3 due to drought and government interference. Longer term, gov’t interference will be a bigger problem than weather…where will we be in a few years? Growers look to plant much more beans this year, in spite of the gov’t interference. This year Russia has exported 18.8 myn mt, Ukraine about 23 myn mt…both are expected to exceed those levels this year. On back to back bumper crops of rice and wheat, and with higher prices, India reports that procurement of wheat and rice is already ahead of last years totals.

Yes, its weather again this morning! Temps are called above average, precip below average more or less through the end of May. Traders are showing only a little respect to the weather man, as they want to see the corn actually in the ground. Energies are higher the $$ about even. COT report confirms that in the last week or so the specs have bought over 55,000 caks (278 myn bu) of corn futures. That?s what we refer to as ?air? under the market. A dime or so leaked out Friday, and if the weather man is correct we will see more profit taking/ consolidating in the next couple weeks until we have a better handle on how many acres did get planted. Specs have also bought up more than 50 myn bu of Chicago SRW futures. Index funds remain steady with their overall long positions unchanged at 650 myn bu long Wheat, and 1.3 byn bu long corn. Another ethanol plant in North Dakota is reporting problems. They say they can chug through 2009, but will need to re-negotiate with the banks to stay solvent. That or buy corn .20 to .30 under the market to maintain cash flows.

Scientists from China and Univ of Cali @ Berkeley have figured a way to stop premature sprouting of wheat/ barley prior to harvest. We run into the problem fairly often throughout the US, but it is a prevalent problem in China. China has also been very active buying up commodities, particularly Iron ore, copper as at least a partial hedge against a declining US $$. In the last month they have bot 57 myn tons of iron and 400,000 tons of copper. China is holding over $2 Trillion in foreign reserves ($767.9 byn in US $$). Taiwan Sugar booked .9 US corn, while the Philippines turned to Indonesia/ Brazil to fill a 2.2 myn bu tender. Canada reported their 16th BSE case since the original 2003 episode.

***Didja Know: Argie can be a fine place to farm, with rich soils, relatively cheap input costs, favorable exchange rates, but the Gov?t takes 60% of farm income in one way or another. Wheat/ Wheat products are easily the # export commodity from Oregon. Per Capita in the US, the average consumption of wheat/ cereal products is about 192 lbs/ year. Oregon is the 13th largest wheat state in the US (we only produce about 2.3% of the US wheat crop).

Weather again is the focus of the trade this morning. The corn belt is seeing another string of showers, then will have a couple more days off before the next system is set to roll through. The US and European models don?t agree on next weeks weather patterns for the US. Since last Friday Beans are up 36, corn is up a dime. Traders are taking heavy profits this morning, and the $$ is up?so futures are getting beat up pretty good right now. It will be interesting to see how the close does. USDA bot 2.4 myn bu of HRW for donation to Uganda/ Ethiopia. 2 ?upper? level SEC employees are under investigation for ?insider trading?. Both of these guys had access to information that was apparently very market sensitive and NON public.

Looking at numbers can be somewhat deceiving at times. On Wednesday for example gasoline stocks showed an unexpected drop of 4.2 myn bbls. The question then is why? And what does it mean? The why is NOT because usage is up, or the economy showed improvement, but rather a dramatic drop in refining activity. Digging a bit deeper, actual usage is running 9 myn bbl/ day vs. 9.3 myn bbl/ day last year. So even with gas running something like $1.80 LESS than last year usage is down?which if we work the math also tells us that 300,000 bbl/ day with a 10% ethanol blend, that equates to about 14 myn bu of corn/ month NOT used to make ethanol?today the market is trading weather in Illinois, Indiana, Ohio.

China will release 3 myn mt of corn from the northern province reserves to the South. The pxes are not yet ?high enough? for export.

***Didja Know: George W Bush was our 43 President, but we have only had 42 presidents, what gives??.GROVER CLEVELAND was both our 22nd and 24th president?.Reagan was the oldest elected as president, Kennedy was the youngest elected, but NOT the youngest to serve as president, that would go to Theodore Roosevelt who took office at 42 after McKinley was assassinated. George Washington would only accept enough money to cover living expenses, while Kennedy actually gave all of his to charity?

                                                HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND!!!

US $$ is lower, crude is lower, the Dow is up a smidgen. Sales report was favorable for corn with 36.8 myn bu of old crop sold, and 9.6 myn bu of new crop sales. Sales totals were within trade range/ estimates for the traders. Last Friday?s 11.7 myn bu sale was nearly 1/3 the total for the week. Corn basis has been weakening across the US as futures edge higher. Farmer selling has been steady on this last rally. Wheat sales were a real disappointing 8.5 myn bu. Traders were looking for something in the 8.5 ? 14.7 myn bu range. With only a couple weeks left, it sure doesn?t look like we will hit the revised (and higher) USDA export number. US regulators revealed plans  to give the SEC and the CFTC more power to prevent market manipulation in over the counter trades, off exchange and exchange trades. New limits, increased transparency and improved oversight should help with regulating the industry.

India announced that they would export 2 myn mt of wheat. This will be their first exports in 3 years, and will likely require some sort of gov?t subsidy, but is an additional burden on the market. Egypt did quarantine 1.9 myn bu of Russian wheat due to ?dead bugs, impurities and seeds above allowable limits?. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. EU has nudged their wheat production estimates lower by 1.7 myn mt. They said recent dryness may affect production, but said weather in the next 6 weeks is critical (same as us). Western Aussie will likely lose their rail service. The industry had hoped for gov?t aid, there doesn?t seem to be any coming. Their only alternative is to add trucks to the roads for next years harvest.

***Didja Know: Men have more blood and more red blood cells than women do. Up until about 150 years ago, right shoes and left shoes were interchangeable. George W Bush was our 43 President, but we have only had 42 presidents, what gives??.Tomorrow?.
