SURVEY SEZ: Where will grain prices be on Wednesday AUGUST 15th? Here is your chance to participate…For the next week, I will be taking everyone’s CONFIDENTIAL guesses on where they think SWW, HRW, DNS, CORN (for Oct/ Nov) and BLY prices will be on August 15th 2008. You can offer a guess on any or all grains. Simply respond back with an email or call me. It COSTS nothing to participate. Winner is the one(s) with the closest guess. There will be an award. All guesses will confidential, but I will release hi/ low/ averages hopefully next week.

Crop progress report will be out at 1 this afternoon. With weather systems moving through the s. plains and the fact that the crop is way behind last years maturity (Kansas is expected to be rated 16% jointed vs. 60% last year and 38% average), we could actually see improvement in the HRW scores. Today the market is putting big premiums on corn due to weather, while not really discounting wheat. Specs/ funds positions in wheat are about as small as they have been in recent memory, while in corn, they are long as they have been since January. Weather man says the southern plains should get more rain, but cooler/ wetter weather is in store for parts of corn country. By the end of the week, into the last half April, weather looks much better for the corn belt (some heat units/ drying weather patterns).

Argie corn harvest is 31%, Brazil is 39% complete. Argie gov’t is still holding up exports of corn/ beans/ wheat with red tape, and are now saying that wheat exports will be unavailable till 5/5. Bangladesh will tender for 3.6 myn bu for June TOS. Paki grain traders are eagerly snatching up new crop supplies, quicker than the gov’t. Current wheat prices in Paki are about $10.70 – 10.90/ bu.

It is interesting to see how the public image of ethanol has changed. Just a short while ago it was being seen as the “next great thing” and lately it seems no one misses an opportunity kick ethanol on the way by. It is good to see that many folks are finally starting to realize the true value of food. A Univ. of Nebraska study attributed only 2% of the increase in food, to increased ethanol production. This by the way is very close to numbers that the USDA recently released. The majority of increases in food costs are actually ‘non’ food items like fuel costs, freight costs, handling, packaging etc.
