Markets act tired. After swapping a gazillion $$$ back and forth all week, I bet the traders are too. At least 1 will be looking for work. MF Global, which is the largest ETF trader in the country had to cough up $141.5 myn to cover losses by 1 employee that “substantially exceeded his own account limits”. Apparently internal computer controls were turned off to facilitate quicker trades, and losses mounted quickly before their discovery. $$$ have just been pouring into commodities as investors look for something with a return. It isn’t the stock market, bonds are over priced, and lately commodities have been the hot ticket. The thing is, as the economy (here and abroad) slow, so will demand for virtually all commodities.

Corn was expected to open down 1 to 3 with wheats expected down hard….that’s pretty much what happened. Corn has recovered to post small gains, while wheats have crashed in the ditch. Old crop slots are generally down 50-60, while new crop slots are down 40-50.

Other news: Argentina extended their export ban from 3/14 till April 8th. Egypt booked 4.4 myn bu of French wheat at $12.20. No doubt this was “lesser” quality wheat. Also of interest is that the AWB offered 2.2 myn bu. Congress keeps “working” on the “farm bill”. One of the big hang ups is about $10 byn in “additional spending”. As they look for places to cut this projected increase, Direct Payments have come under fire, especially with prices high. Here are a few facts about the 2002 “Farm Bill”:

  • The “Farm Bill” accounted for .56% of the entire Federal Budget. Some of the Big Ticket items were: Defense 16%, Social Security 23%, Medicare 19%, Non Defense Descretionary 19%…get this: 10% went to pay INTEREST!
  • Of the .56% that the “Farm Bill” got, 55% went to Food stamps, WIC, School lunches etc.
  • 25% of the Farm Bill went to commodity payments, 7.7% to crop insurance, 7.8% to conservation.

***Didja Know: The first woman to run for president was Victoria Woodhull in 1872. Women didn’t even have the right to vote at that time! Clark Gable was a major in the army, when he was discharged, his papers were signed by Captain named Ronald Reagan. NBC was the first “Radio Network”. The first president of the National Broadcast Company was a guy named David Sarnoff…who happened to hear the ships distress signals, and alerted other ships in the area, that were able to rescue the eventual survivors….

                                                            HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND

Pretty amazing stuff, what is happening in the grain industry. Never happened before, may never happen again. Yesterday KC wheat gained over $1 in less than 2 minutes, Chicago went from limit down to limit up in just a few minutes. Stop orders were worthless as the market just blew past them going and coming. Specs are said to be bullish still, but yesterday HAD to shake their confidence. Exporters are more than happy to watch from the sidelines. Only trades that happen are during trading hours, and with a confirmation call. There continues to be some ‘chatter’ of gov’t intervention to restrict wheat exports. I don’t know if they are serious or not, but we can hope that common sense will prevail…but we also know that common sense isn’t as common as it used to be. Sales reports were rated as "acceptable". Corn sales tallied a luke warm 23.6 myn bu, Beans were 20 myn bu, Wheats were a solid 11.3 myn bu.

Turkey bot some off quality EU wheat, and Egypt has indicated a willingness to do the same and lower standards to reduce costs. This whole old crop wheat thing could ‘collapse’ quicker than we were expecting. There is also talk now that Japan may follow SK lead and accept GMO corn as early as this summer…SK was BIG, Japan would be HUGE, and perhaps pave the way for GMO wheat. Brazilian gov’t has approved GMO corn for production. IGC (Int’l Grain Council) has increased wheat production estimates to 646 myn mt, which is up 4 myn mt from last month.

Late winter storms have dumped literally tons of moisture across the corn belt. This is important for a couple things: 1 there will be talk of ‘late plantings’ for corn. I would discount these unless we see a whole string of spring storms. Remember the growers of today have the ability to plant 70-80% of the US corn acres in 1 week (we saw last year). As summer approaches, market will be expecting talk of drought. Remember all this snow will go a LONG way to build deep subsoil moisture, which MAY be important later. The North Dakota mill that said they may need to import wheat from Canada to continue running, has been able to gimp along. They are now saying stocks look adequate and they may not need to import any wheat.

What a day already! Seems to be a theme developing…. Last 2 days the Mpls March has traded a range of $7.55! The market is “technically” about done bidding for 2008 corn acres. The CRC insurance apparently is cal’c based on the AVERAGE close of the Dec ’08 futures for the month of FEB. US corn acres appear to be ‘amped’ with moistu
